About Dwarf Names
Dwarves are the carved peoples of the mountain. Their oldest holds are not built so much as discovered — vast halls hewn from the bones of the world by generations of stonecutters who understood that the mountain was already a home waiting for the right doorway. The dwarves call this work patience; outsiders, walking awed through halls older than every nearby human kingdom, sometimes call it obsession. Both are correct.
A dwarf's life moves in long arcs. Three hundred years is a typical span, and within it a dwarf may serve a single apprenticeship for forty, a single guild for a hundred, and a single grudge for the rest. Dwarves remember everything — wrongs, debts, recipes, vein-locations, the precise weather on the day a hold was lost — and they pass this memory down in stone-bound runebooks that take a lifetime to read. Outsiders who break faith with a dwarf are sometimes startled to find the breach still remembered four generations later.
Dwarven society is organized around clans, each anchored to a mountain hold and a craft tradition — smithing, brewing, stonecutting, ledger-keeping, war. A dwarf's clan name is the first thing they offer in introduction and the last thing they would willingly surrender. To shame the clan is the worst dishonor available; to elevate it is the highest possible achievement, and most dwarves spend their lives quietly trying.
Dwarf Naming Conventions
Dwarven names are short, hard-edged, and built from strong consonants — Adrik, Baern, Brottor, Darrak, Eberk, Gardain, Harbek, Kildrak, Morgran, Orsik, Rangrim, Thorin, Veit. Female names follow the same pattern with their own range — Amber, Artin, Audhild, Dagnal, Diesa, Helja, Kathra, Kristryd, Riswynn, Sannl, Torbera, Vistra. Clan names are descriptive of craft, ancestor, or deed: Battlehammer, Brawnanvil, Dankil, Fireforge, Frostbeard, Ironfist, Loderr, Rumnaheim, Stormforge, Thunderwell. A dwarf is introduced clan-first in their hold and given-first outside it.
