Questions

Things people ask

  • How does this name generator work?
Two engines power it. The fast one uses markov chains trained on per-race seed name pools — recombines them into new names that sound right for each race. The optional AI Conjure feature uses a free large-language-model to suggest names that match a character description you write yourself.
  • Are the names free to use?
Yes — every name produced by this site is released under CC0. Use them in your campaigns, novels, video games, screenplays, anything. No attribution required, though it's appreciated.
  • Is the AI Conjure feature really free?
Yes for the user. We pay nothing per request because we use OpenRouter's free model tier. There is a soft daily cap shared across all visitors — if it's exceeded, the AI feature pauses for the day and the markov reroll keeps working.
  • How accurate are these names to D&D 5e lore?
Each race's seed pool is hand-curated from public-domain naming conventions and original constructions that follow the linguistic feel of that race. Lore descriptions on the race pages are original prose written for this site — we don't copy from Wizards of the Coast publications.
  • Is this site affiliated with Wizards of the Coast?
No. Dungeons & Dragons, D&D, and related logos are trademarks of Wizards of the Coast LLC. This is an unofficial fan tool. We don't reproduce WotC art or copyrighted text.
  • Do you store my searches or character descriptions?
Markov names are generated in your browser — nothing is sent to a server. AI Conjure submissions are forwarded to OpenRouter to generate the response and briefly cached server-side (1 hour) so refreshes don't waste the daily quota; we don't link them to identity.
  • Can I get the names through an API?
Yes. There's a free public JSON API at /api/names — no signup, CORS open, CC0 output. See the API docs page for the parameter shape.
  • What if the AI says something weird or wrong?
It happens with language models. Treat AI Conjure suggestions as a starting point — edit, mix, or roll the markov reroll for variety. The names are creative prompts, not authoritative lore.
